Chapter 12

Octavia

I stated several times that I wanted Jasmine’s birthday party to be simple and sweet; cake, ice cream, balloons, a moon bounce, pizza, and punch. Simple and sweet. However, one look at my parents’ backyard and I could see that my words and wishes had gone in one ear and out the other. My parents’ backyard had been turned into something reminiscent of the state fair. In the back of the property there was a carousel ride along with a small Ferris wheel. A few feet away, the left side of the lawn had been turned into a grazing area for four miniature ponies that would later provide pony rides for the children who attended the party. In addition to the rides and ponies, there were clowns, cotton candy and popcorn machines, and a booth for face painting and even a miniature pizzeria.

Ilene and Mama had went too far with the details and taken the party to the next level. I wanted to give them a piece of my mind and let them know I couldn’t believe they completely disregarded my feelings, but the truth is deep down inside, I knew they would and if the two of them had come with anything less than over the top, it would have meant something was horribly wrong. Besides you can’t put a price on your child’s happiness and when Jasmine saw the set-up, her reaction was priceless. Her eyes lit up like a sky with countless stars and she squealed with excitement. The children we invited seemed just as thrilled as she was and their parents appeared equally impressed. Tamara arrived shortly after the party began, and to my surprise she was accompanied by a tall, slim brother; with mocha-colored skin. The two of them looked well acquainted; holding hands and all smiles.

“That’s Stan,” Damon whispered as the two of them approached us.

“Stan? Stan—the almost ex—Stan?”

“That’s him.”

“Wow…” I was dazed and damn confused, but I put a smile on my face and was hoping and praying my facial expression didn’t match my thoughts.

“Hey,” I greeted her. “I’m happy you could make it.”

“Me too,” she smiled. “I hope you don’t mind, but I brought Stan along.”

“Not at all. It’s nice to meet you, Stan,” I said politely. “I’m Octavia.”

“Nice to meet you, Octavia,” he said, shaking my hand. “I’ve heard nothing but good things about you. Damon, it’s been awhile brah,” he said, turning to Damon. “How have you been?”

“Good and yourself?” Damon stated, shaking his hand.

“I’m doing much better now,” he said, slipping his arm around Tamara’s waist.

I knew it was none of my business, but I couldn’t wait to get Tamara alone so I could bombard her with questions about the two of them. An hour and a half later, Jasmine’s three-tier Princess cake had been cut, the presents were all open, the performers were gone, and all of her guests, with exception of Tamara and Stan were gone. I sat under the small tent where the food was served earlier, talking with Damon, Tamara, and Stan about the weather and current events.
